Kentucky Firewise Communities Program

Many homes and communities in Kentucky are located in the wildland-urban interface. Wildland-urban interface areas are fringe areas where homes and businesses intermingle with forests or wildlands. Residents enjoy the beauty and tranquility these areas offer. However, most residents don't realize they may be living on the edge of a wildland fire disaster.

The Kentucky Firewise Communities Program provides citizens with the knowledge necessary to prepare and maintain a firewise neighborhood while cooridnating with their local fire department and the Kentucky Division of Forestry for effective emergency response. The goal of this program is to encourage action that minimizes home loss to wildfire by preparing for a fire before it occurs.

Brush, grass or forest fires do not have to be disasters. The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Firewise Communities program encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters, and others in the effort to protect people and property from wildfire risks.

The program is co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department of the Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters.

To save lives and property from wildfire, NFPA's Firewise Communities program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and each other from the risk of wildfire.
